My Bloody Valentine

Summary

Twenty years after the infamous murders of serial killer turned urban legend Harry Warden, the small town he tormented is having their first Valentine's Day Dance since the murders. However, when people start turning up dead the sherif is forced to cancel the dance, much to the dismay of the local youths. Unwilling to let the sherif spoil their fun over an old urban legend, they decide to host their own party in the local mines- the very same mines the murders took place in! What could possibly go wrong?

Rating

Scare Factor: 1/5

My Bloody Valentine isn't scary so much as suspenseful. It will have you shouting "No!! Don't go in there!" like any good slasher, but has perhaps lost its edge due to how common the genre troupes are now.

Grossness: 4/5

The practical effects are really where this movie shines for me. There's a lot of really fun, creative kills and the effects don't disappoint. For the sake of not spoiling anything I'll just let the rating speak for itself.

Good Time: 3.5/5

With decent pacing, an interesting plot, and likeable enough characters, the movie is a pretty fun watch. It drags a bit in places, especially if you don't find yourself interested in the poorly developed love triangle, but once things pick up they pick up!

My Thoughts

I was surprised by how much I came to like the characters by the end. They felt very real and, possibly because I spent a lot of time in rural Canadian small towns very similar to the setting while growing up, very familiar. I found myself rooting for them and sad when they died, which is a sign of good writing. The climactic reveal wasn't what I was hoping for, but wasn't enough to put me off the movie.
